As a member of VOLCO, districts have the opportunity to spend their commodity entitlement in a number of ways. Each district has the option to spend down their entitlement between processed commodity items, brown box items, and/or DoD fresh produce. Commodity rebates for cheese, potatoes, and tomatoes are also available. VOLCO processes approximately 60-70 commodity items per school year, including beef, chicken, cheese, pork, turkey, eggs, peanut butter, and apples. Once your allocations are complete, all commodity orders and rebates are completed by the VOLCO coordinator, lessening the burden on the district directors.
For most commercial products, VOLCO districts are members of a group purchasing organization. We are contracted with HPS and our service provider is Gordon Food Service.
As a member of VOLCO there are many beneficial tools that assist districts in saving time and money. A nutritional analysis and meal planning program that is simple and easy to use that allows districts to meet all that is required of them from the district level all the way to the USDA, including the 6 cent certification compliance. Districts may also track allergen information, publishing menus for students and parents, and create and share meal plans and recipes.
